Stanislau Shushkevich To French Politics: Take Courage, Change Strategy

The first head of state of independent Belarus urged French politicians to adjust their strategy for treating terrorism.

The former chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich via “Radio Svaboda” expressed his condolences to relatives of victims of terrorist attacks in Paris and urged French politicians to adjust their strategy for dealing with “a different civilization”.

– First of all, I express my deepest condolences to the relatives of those killed in these horrible attacks. I would like to say special words to the French people. You know, I’ve been to France many times both as a politician and as a lecturer. Nowhere in the world have I seen such an audience as there: both students and simply human. It was a very benevolent audience, perfect treatment, excellent questions. I haven’t seen such a hospitable country anywhere else. How could anyone do ill to such wonderful people? This is an ugly civilization. Such things shouldn’t happen. Once again, I express my most sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims and those injured. But I also have to say that while in France I saw a different France. There is the Sorbonne and there is the Paris East train station district, where lot’s of foreigners live. And it seems that they are not very good at adopting French manners. I don’t know. Probably it’s time to change some political approaches.

– How do you assess the effectiveness of security services in France?

– Gentleness and courtesy of the French turned to be a disadvantage. The French security services appeared to be weak as they didn’t manage to identify such a crime where more than 150 people were killed. It is bad and demonstrates (pardon my words) the weakness of the ruling government. I never give any estimation, but in this case the weakness led to the deaths of so many innocent people.

– Why hasn’t the Charli Hebdo tragedy taught France to take precautions?

– You know, there was one more reason for it to happen. That was an action against the freedom of speech, while this time it’s an action against the European civilization. A rigid radical Islamic civilization stands against us. I’ve visited those parts of the world before, I’ve met representatives of those countries. But I want to note that we are now talking about some different terrible structure. As for me, after these terrorist acts I will reconsider my visions of who is who and what is what.

– How can events in Paris affect the situation in Belarus?

– For now it won’t affect us anyhow. Monitoring by our secret police is at such a high level that nothing can be expected to happen. One particular person is thoroughly protected and in case of any suspicions, the source of these suspicions is eliminated in advance. We have a different kind of excess.
