Aleh Trusau: If Occupation Army Comes To Us, Slutsk Fighters’ Descendants Will Take Up Arms

No external forces would be able to invade or annex Belarus easily.

Belsat TV channel decided to ask passers-by about their attitude to the Slutsk uprising, which anniversary was celebrated yesterday. The response of Minsk dwellers to the significant historical event was positive or neutral.

“I am urging my Belarusians: learn, don’t be illiterate! Even Putin said: education should be on the first place! After realizing that, you should change and become courageous!” – a man said.

Citizens of Russia are not afraid of the armed uprising of Belarusians as well. “You know, I am inconversant with the subject of the Belarusian history, as I am a Russian citizen. But if it was taking place, there is nothing bad about that,” – a passer-by said.

The event when little flags with Pahonia were handed out, held by Alternativa yesterday in Minsk, was not disbanded by police. The policemen confined themselves to copying passport details of organisers. The topic of Slutsk Uprising is not banned, but at least silenced in our country at the official level. In school history textbooks the armed anti-Bolshevik uprising is mentioned only in additional materials, which are not required for everyone to study. Though the topic of resistance to the Eastern invaders has been becoming more and more relevant recently, as the aggressive “Russian world” is becoming stronger, a historian Aleh Trusau is convinced.

“If, Heaven forbid! – foreign invaders will come to our lands, descendants of Slutsk fighters will take up arms as well. That is why they should know that is would not be easy for any external forces to seize, annex Belarus,” – he explained.

Slutsk units of the Belarusian People’s Republic, who were made up mostly from local peasants, have been disputing the advance of the Soviet Army for about a month. No wonder that the anniversary is celebrated not on one day. A festive demonstration and a meeting took place in Slutsk on November 28. They were organised by a number of oppositional parties and organisations, and were authorized by local authorities. And on the next day a bus trip to the places of battles against the Russian aggressor was planned.
