Toll road network to grow 70% in Belarus

The network of toll roads will grow to 2,000 kilometres by 2020.

The statement was made today by Yauheni Rakala, the head of the main department for roads of the Ministry of Transport and Communication, BelTA reports.

The network of toll roads in the BelToll system will be increased by more than 300 kilometres in 2015. Toll segments are expected to appear on the reconstructed part of the M5 highway from Homel to Zhlobin, on four-lane parts on the R23 highway Minsk-Mikashevichy and the R21 highway from Vitsebsk to the Russian border. The current total length of toll roads in Belarus is 1,189 kilometres.

Belarus plans to reconstruct and construct about 1,158 kilometres of republican roads and more than 2,210 linear metres of bridges in 2015-2019. It is planned to overhaul 1,600km and repair 7,200km of republican roads by 2030.

Yauheni Rakala adds that 90km of roads will be reconstructed and constructed in 2015, 783km of roads and 1,683 linear metres of bridges will be repaired, 39km of roads and 1,473 linear metres of bridges will be overhauled in 2015. The works on the reconstruction of the Babruisk-Zhlobin segment of the M5 highway Minsk-Homel will be continued in 2015. It is expected that the road will receive the first category status in 2016.

The reconstruction of the road Minsk-Hrodna will start this year. It was arranged that the World Bank would issue a loan of $250 million for the works. Other plans for 2015 include the preparation of the general plan of the development of motorway service on republican roads up to 2020.

The length of good roads will increase by the year 2020 by 4,972 kilometres compared to 2014 and reach about 60% of the country's total length of roads. The length of unsatisfactory roads will decrease by 2.657km and reach 11% of the total length of roads.

The speed limit will be raised on 520km of roads.
