1

Public and human rights activists in Belarus are searched when crossing the State border.

Close attention of border guards to politically-active citizens becomes especially acute on the eve of significant political events. Human rights activists believe the country has created a system of so-called political detective work and opposition leaders are included in "black lists" that border guards use in carrying out a thorough inspection of activists on the border, Viasna Human Rights Center reports.

The latest facts. In late 2014 at the border crossing "Hudahai" border guards removed from the train Vasil Paliakou, the Deputy Chairman of the United Civil Party, to conduct a personal search. December 28 he was coming from Vilnius to Minsk. During a thorough search the politician was forced to take off his clothes and even shoes.

And at night January 16 the vehicle of Viktar Sazonau, Hrodna's civil right activist, drew an increased attention to of the State Border and Customs Services at the cross border point "Bruzgi". Viktar Sazonau with two more social and political activists of Hrodna was on his way back home from Poland. His car was driven into a hangar for inspection. Personal belongings of Hrodna dwellers were also carefully and repeatedly checked. After telephone consultations customs officers drove the car even for X-ray inspection. After telephone consultations the officers drove the car for the x-ray inspection. And only after that the activists had a specially prepared paper to sign and were allowed to leave.

Human rights activist Viktar Sazonau is one of the top leaders on detention and inspections at the border. He can remind dozens of such cases.
