PACE to resume cooperation with “house of representatives”?

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe plans to resume cooperation with the Belarusian “parliament”.

BelTA cites Andrea Rigoni, rapporteur of the PACE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, who is paying a visit to Minsk on February 25-26.

“We have come to Belarus with this goal in mind, i.e. to resume and renew the dialogue. Our cooperation should be continued. We are ready for it and expect return moves from Belarus,” Andrea Rigoni said.

Rigoni met with Uladzimir Andreichanka, chairman of the “house of representatives”, and thanked Belarus for organising the visit. He noted that the previous visit of the Council of Europe's rapporteur took place five years ago.

“It is a very important event for our organisation because it means that we are resuming a dialogue. I sincerely hope for cooperation,” he stressed.

The rapporteur noted that PACE is the oldest organisation both in Europe and in the world that unites 47 countries:

“I call it the big Europe from Reykjavik to Vladivostok. Frankly speaking, it is unclear to me why Belarus is not a member of the Council of Europe. If we look at the geographical map, we will see that Belarus is in the center of the big Europe, and its absence in the organisation can be viewed as a lacuna on the geographical map of Europe. So, we are here because we would like to have a clear picture about the situation.”

None “elections” held in Belarus since 1995 have been recognised by democratic countries and international organisations as legal due to falsifications and violations by the authorities.
