Maira Mora: Relations between EU and Belarus have normalized, but not improved

The main roadblock on the way to improving relations between the EU and Belarus is political prisoners.

This statement has been made by ambassadors of the European Union to Belarus Maira Mora to LETA agency, tut.by informs.

Commenting on Latvia’s determination to give a new momentum to the relations between Belarus and the EU, Maira Mora said that the relations of the EU and Belarus “have normalized, but not improved.”

“They will improve only after we clear away last obstacles in our relations. Belarus has made several steps, but these steps are very little,” she said.

The head of the EU mission to Belarus has also expressed an opinion that radical or sharp changes in the relations could not be expected.

“Some of the political prisoners were released, some of them are still serving the sentence. Belarus has started to cooperate with the Council of Europe in the issue of the death penalty abolition more closely. In these questions we have not gone outside the framework of discussions, however it is a move in the right direction,” Mora said.

“That’s what we really cannot accept,” she stressed.
