Azarenka loses Doha final to Lucie Safarova

Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka failed to win the third title in Doha after losing 4-6, 3-6 to Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the final.

It was the first big victory for the Czech player. Lucie Safarova and Victoria Azarenka have met six times on the court before, with the Belarusian leading 6-0.

On her way to the Doha Total Open final Victoria Azarenka eased pass German Angelique Kerber (World No.11) 6-0, 6-3, defeated world number 27 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, took a confident 6-3, 6-1 win over world number five Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, and defeated Venus Williams of the United States (17) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 for the first time in her career. In Doha Victoria Azarenka performed under her new coach Wim Fissette who worked with Belgium's Kim Clijsters and Romania's Simona Halep. Azarenka's former coach Sam Sumyk has been hired to coach Canada's Eugenie Bouchard.

Victoria Azarenka won the Doha tournament in 2012 (beating Australia's Samantha Stosur 6-1, 6-2 in the final) and in 2013 (seeing off Serena Williams of the United State 7-6, 2-6, 6-3).

During her professional career, which began in 2003, Victoria Azarenka won 17 titles at the WTA competitions.
