Kanstantsin Zhukouski: Policemen lied I threatened to kill him

A public activist from Homel Kanstantisn Zhukouski is set to appeal against his arrest in the regional court,

We remind that on February 20 Zhukouski planned to visit Homel regional executive committee, in order to submit a complaint against a developer who is building a high-rise building near his private house. Near the entrance door of the regional executive committee the activist had a conflict with a policemen who guarded it. As a result Zhukouski was detained and taken to the court of the Central district of Homel. On the same day he was sentenced to 10 days’ arrest for alleged use of foul language. Protesting against the ungrounded accusation, in the temporary detention facility Zhukouski announced a waterless hunger strike, BelaPAN informs.

On March 2 in the morning the wife and friends of the activist were waiting for the activist outside the temporary detention facility. However, Zhukouski was not released in time, he was taken out of the building and driven away in an unknown direction. As it turned out later, from the detention facility the activist was taken to Knizhnaya Street, which is almost near to his house. “My wife and friends were waiting for me near the detention centre, but I was not released, I was packed into ta police car again, I was said I was detained, and for half an hour more I was travelling around the city. Five policemen were with me. That’s how the budget money, including my taxes, is spent,” Zhukouski said.

He also told details of his detention of February 20. As said by Zhukouski, he was detained by policemen he had called out himself. “I entered the regional executive committee to bring my complaint. A policeman didn’t let me into the building. I demanded to give me a book of complaints. He refused to give it to me, which is a violation of the law. I called out police. When a policeman arrived, he accompanied me into the building, he gave me the book of complaints. I left three entries there, and then the policeman received a phone call, from his commanders probably, for me to be taken to a police department,” Zhukouski said.

In the police department a report was drawn up against him for alleged use of foul language, and the policemen were witnesses in the court. “Notably, one of them told lies, he said I threatened to kill him. But why a criminal case has not been initiated against me for death threats, and I stood trial for alleged foul speech?” Zhukouski noted.

As for the hunger strike, it lasted for the entire 10 days of his arrest, and 5 days were waterless hunger strike. Then after some health problems he started to drink water.

Zhukouski believes his detention and arrest are related to the fact that he is fighting against demolition of private houses in central Homel, he is writing complaints and applications on different agencies, and at the moment a civil case is considered by court. “I had been fighting against our corrupted top officials, and they are simply sick and tired of me. They decided I have become pretty brazen, and incarcerated me for 10 days. I was arrested as I had ventured too far – I called out police into the regional executive committee,” the activist believes.

It is not the first time when Kanstantsin Zhukouski is detained by police, while he had called out policemen himself. Thus, on August 25 riot policemen detained the activist in the yard of his own house. Zhukouski had called out police as a truck from the construction site nearby had blocked his yard, and the driver ignored his requests to unblock the way. As a result, Zhukouski stood trial for insubordination to policemen’s demands and he was sentenced to five days of arrest.
