Polish veterinaries: Minsk hushes up scale of ASF contamination

Belarusian veterinary service is concealing the scale of African swine fever contamination (ASF) on its territory.

It was said by the chief veterinary officer of Poland Marek Pirsztuk at the meeting with his Russian counterpart Yevgeniy Nepoklonov, ИА REGNUM was told on March 23 by the Directorate of the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Monitoring Service in Kaliningrad region.

According to Mr Pirsztuk, for today 44 centres of ASF infection have been registered in wild boars and domestic pigs’ populations on the territory of Poland. Outbreaks are mostly registered among wild boars populations near the border of Poland with Belarus, within 20 km from the border.

The chief veterinary officer of Poland stated that ASF virus was brought to Poland and the Baltic States from Belarus in a trans-border migration of boars. At the moment it is impossible to liquidate the disease without an active cooperation with Belarus, which veterinary service, according to Pirsztuk, does not provide information about the real picture of the ASF spreading on its territory. At the same time, every week one boar died of ASF is found in Poland in the troublesome zone which is bordering on Belarus.
