Alcohol addicts to pay for medical services

Belarusian MPs want stricter anti-alcohol laws.

It was said by Mikalai Ivanchanka, the deputy head of the standing committee on ecology, management of natural resources and the Chernobyl disaster of the “house of representatives”, at a meeting at the Minsk regional executive committee to discuss the implementation of regulation No.1 “On measures to strengthen national security and discipline”, BelTA reports.

Mikalai Ivanchanka draws attention to the fact that abuse of alcohol often leads to death or injuries, also at work. The amount of alcohol consumption per capita is decreasing, but the measures taken are not enough, the MP thinks.

“We need a more effective systematic work to counter the spread and consumption of alcohol. It may include a ban on selling alcoholic beverages to people under 21, laws on maximum volume of alcohol in beer and restrictions on beer advertising,” he noted.

The MP also proposes to coordinate efforts at all levels to hold so called sober days.

“One district organises such a campaign, but a neighbouring one doesn’t hold it. As a result, people go there and buy alcohol. The work is not coordinated,” he thinks.

One of the proposed measures is to make alcohol addicts pay for medical services.

“I think we should form a working group to elaborate the anti-alcohol programme for 2016-2020. I expect specialists of the Minsk regional executive committee to join the group and put forward concrete proposals. If we don’t promote sobriety, the sad statistics of alcohol consumption won’t change,’ Mikalai Ivanchanka said.
