Henadz Fyadynich: Lukashenka fears people, so he meets with law-enforcers

The dictator should expect the most difficult year of all he had ever faced.

It’s an opinion of the chairman of the REP (Radio and Electronic Industry) Trade Union Henadz Fyadynich. In an interview to charter97.org he comments on the statements of Alyaksandr Lukashenka that “there would be no “squares” (maidans) in Belarus”, which has been made by the dictator during his visit to the military unit No.3214 in Minsk.

- When something is prohibited for a long time, people become interested what it is, and they would be willing to see it. Pronouncing these words, Lukashenka may end up in a bad way. When “don’t go there” is repeated too often, people are sure to take to the streets themselves,– the trade union leader said.

- Why the dictator mentions the square speaking specifically to law enforcers? On February 23 Lukashenka told about that speaking to top brass of the Ministry of Defence, and today he is speaking about that to special unit officers.

- If the authorities felt secure and had no fear of their own nation, there would be no such statements. It is clear that such statements are flaunted in order to persuade people that Ukrainian scenario is impossible in Belarus. But for how long could it be exploited? Belarusians know about the situation in Ukraine anyway, and they know about their losses and gains.

- Such statements are heard against the background of sole traders’ protests, discharges of workers from large-scale enterprises, delayed payments of wages, devaluation. Are they connected to the situation in the country’s economy?

- There has never been such a difficult pre-election year over the entire period of Lukashenka’s rule. That is why such statements have been heard several times already after the recent collapse of the Belarusian ruble. The situation is: households are going to be short of money soon. Every worker is concerned about that: people want to work in a normal way, and be paid good wages. But instead of offering some steps for reforming the economy, in order to switch its development onto a normal track, we are hearing statements of the authorities with calls not to protest on the square.

The members of the special operations units also have parents, relatives, who work for organisations, at enterprises, which have moved to a three- or four-days week. They cannot be unaware of problems in the economy. That is why such prohibitions of the authorities will get them nowhere. They should have been consulting the nation earlier, and listen to their neighbours. Now, when there is little time left before the election, there are going to be more and more such statements about the square, and that the army should secure trouble-free holding of election. The question is, whether people would be willing to participate in this election. I would not be surprised if Lukashenka issues a decree about compulsory participation in the election, to turn the right to vote into a duty.

Now consumer goods marketplaces in the country are experiencing problems. Customers are buying less food and merchandise. Job cuts are taking place at enterprises. Shops which cannot sell stocks have huge indebtedness. The situation is bad, to say the least. The regime is responsible for that. If they are lacking professionals, competent people, who know what to do, they should simply thank the nation for patience and resign!
