Bust of Taras Shevchenko in Mahilyou damaged by vandals again

For the second time in the last year the unknown ripped off letters from the pedestal.

The bust of Taras Shevchenko in Mahilyou was damaged again. The deputy chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) Ihar Barysau, who noticed that, filed an application to police. He asks policemen to carry out an investigation related to the act of vandalism, and oblige the administration of Kastrychnitski district of Mahilyou to install surveillance cameras along the embankment of the Dnieper, and to step up guarding of the bust of Shevchenko, Euroradio informs.

We remind that last time the letters from the base of the bust were torn off in January, on the day before the Day of National Unity of Ukraine.

The bust of Taras Shevchenko was unveiled on the bank of the Dnieper in Mahilyou on the initiative of the local Ukrainian community in 2005. At the opening ceremony a large delegation from Ukraine was present, as well as top officials of Mahilyou region and the city. Local Ukrainians traditionally gather near the monument and light candles.
