Sensational case of customs officers: "All cannot be imprisoned. Not enough cells"

Thirty employees of Kamenny Log are behind bars, the cell is designed for 34 people.

Relatives of detainees have already met with lawyers, but they do not know what specifically customs officials are charged with. Everyone is waiting for official comments, Mikhail, a former employee of Ashmiany Customs Office tells "Komsomolskaya Pravda in Belarus".

The town is in panic. On April 3 Lukashenka told the Belarusians of the mass detention of employees of the Kamenny Log checkpoint. The KGB leads the case, no details are known. Thirty one employees of 96 are behind bars. When on April 7 journalists arrived in Ashmiany they were told: new detentions are expected any day. A week passed.

–There were not any more detentions because it is impossible to put everyone in the remand prison. They say after investigations some will be released and others will be imprisoned. There are 4-5 people in a cell, there is no place for them, an acquaintance of detainees says.

Employees of Ashmiany customs service are in the KGB detention center, known as "amerikanka". There are 18 cells, an isolation ward is designed for 34 people. Involvants of a sensational criminal case are accused of bribery. Their houses, apartments and cars are seized. The "KP" managed to find the apartment of the former customs officer, who hid $1 million 800 thousand under a bath. It is a five-storey old building. And it was impossible to guess that there was hidden a huge sum.

- They came at 9 am and said I would be an attesting witness. They photographed every bill so I was at home only at 6 am the following day, the neighbour of ex-customs officer said.

A new customs officer's house is distrained. The man together with his family intended to move there any day, but did not make it in time.
