Hrodna journalists summoned by SMS

Freelance journalists are tried for illegal production and distribution of information.

Two freelance journalists Aliaksandr Dzianisau and Aliaksandr Kirkevich are judged under Article 22.9 for illegal production and distribution of information. The judge Alena Piatrova charges them with a report on exhibition of Slutsk belts in Hrodna in early March, Radio Svaboda reports.

Journalists were summoned by SMS. An eyewitness Halina Khamko, the employee of Hrodna State Museum of History of Religionб, was also summoned. Aliaksandr Dzianisau tells of the first day of the trial:

-The first thing I noticed is that we as individuals cannot produce and distribute any product of mass media. The law on mass media says that we as individuals are not responsible for it. We were just present there, I was not taking interview as I was standing behind the camera. Sviatlana Khamko confirmed it. Neither Aliaksandr nor I could not distribute the information.

In November last year the judge Alena Piatrova fined Mikhail Karnevich, the member of Belarusian Association of Journalists and accredited correspondent of Radio Svaboda, and civil rights activist Uladzimir Khilmanovich for participation in an unauthorized mass event. The judge did not accept the claim by Ales Kirkevich to record his words in Belarusian.
