German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his belief that Russia was unable to destroy the European Union.

Delfi.lt reports the Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier being in Lithuania with a visit expressed a hope that Russia would not manage to divide the European Union (the EU), amid presuppositions that Moscow might lift the embargo of food products from the countries that were friendlier towards the Kremlin.

"It is possible that the attempts exist and that they will exist in the future. There were attempts to do this but it was not successful," the Minister told journalists when asked about Moscow's possible decisions to allow imports of food products from certain countries.

"Discussions about this are underway in Europe, however, we can make common decisions. We had a discussion and the discussion was controversial, the decision has been made. I believe the attempts to divide Europe will not be successful," the Minister added.

Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius said at a joint briefing that "the threat exists," therefore, the EU should be ready. In his words, it is very important for the European Commission (EC) to be responsible in this aspect.
