Stanislau Shushkevich to EU politicians: Adhere to principles

There are no changes in the direction of democratisation in Belarus.

Johannes Hahn, the EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, was in Minsk on April 16-17 during a visit of two other groups of EU officials – political directors of the ministries of foreign affairs of the Weimar Triangle countries and chief analysts from the foreign ministries the Visegrad Group countries.

What stands behind the visits? First head of independent Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich speaks to Belorusskaya Pravda.

“I'd like them to continue to adhere to principles,” he said. “What we saw yesterday and see today is that they pretend they see changes in Belarus. I mean human rights, the liberalisation, the situation of political prisoners. But we don't have any changes. They should adhere to principles. Javier Solana and Benita Ferrero Waldner visited Belarus some time ago and set conditions for the normalisation of relations. EU officials should remember about it.

I like the position of the rapporteur on Belarus, who said there were no changes here for the last 20 years. Let them listen to their rapporteur in the European Parliament and take actions in line with the events in Belarus. Our dictator made no progress. He again wants to find European money for nothing. He pretends he plays a role in the Ukrainian events, but he doesn't play any role, he didn't make a single proposal. There are no changes in Belarus. Europe must understand that it should react to changes and not to react to talks.”
