Volha Mikalaichyk: Yury Rubtsou held in complete isolation

The political prisoner continues his hunger strike in the pre-trial detention facility in Pruzhany.

Activist Volha Mikalaichyk calls on all people to write to Yury Rubtsou to support him. A second criminal case was opened against him. Rubtsou may get a term in prison.

“The latest news is that a lawyer visited him in Baranavichy. It is very important that people write to him. He is in complete isolation. Letters is the only thing we can do for him. We also can call on the lawyer to do his best so that Rubtsou can receive letters. He is not in prison yet, you even cannot send him a book.

Address: 225413, Brestskaya obl., Baranovichy, ul. Brestskaya, 258, SIZO №6.

Some guys wore T-shirts “Lukashenka, go away” at yesterday's Chernobyl Way rally. It was a campaign to support Yury Rubtsou. I was in a T-shirt reading “Freedom for Statkevich”, but Mikalai Kolas and Maksim Viniarski near me were in “Lukashenka, go away” T-shirts. If 300 or 400 people put them on, he could be given another prison term,” the activist says.

Nasta Loika, human rights defender from Viasna human rights centre, says Yury Rubtsou refuses to stop the hunger strike.

“Yury Rubtsou continues his hunger strike. On the one hand, he doesn't feel good. On the other hand, he has experience. It's not his first hunger strike. He never says how he really feels. The only problem is that he hasn't had a medical checkup. Correctional officers don't pay much attention to his hunger strike. All try to persuade him to stop the hunger strike, but he refuses,” she says.

A new criminal case was opened against the political prisoner for evasion of serving a term of punishment (article 415 of the Criminal Code). Yury Rubtsou refused to work on a low salary and demanded to give him a job with the country's average salary of $600. The political prisoner thinks the new criminal case against him is illegal, as well as the previous case for insulting a judge.

On October 6, 2014, Yuy Rubtsou was sentenced by Minsk's Tsentralny district court to 1.5 years in open type correctional facility No.7 for insulting a judge (article 391 of the Criminal Code). On December 22, 2014, he was sent to the village of Kuplin in the Pruzhany district to serve his term.
