Ukrainian flags confiscated from fans at Okean Elzy concert in Vitsebsk

Famous Ukrainian band Okean Elzy played a concert in Vitsebsk as part of a tour in Belarus.

Police officers wrote down personal information of people who tried to bring yellow and blue ribbons to the concert. Fans also were not allowed to use Ukrainian flags, Radio Svaboda reports.

“I wasn't allowed to take Ukrainian ribbons with me. The police wrote down information from my student card and my address. I tried to call a journalist, but they took me by the arm, asked to delete the photo and not to take pictures. Security guards said only portraits of musicians were allowed,” a fan says.

A man tried to unfurl a Ukrainian flag before the stage, but security guards seized it. Other fans whistled in response.

According to Nasha Niva, fans threw a Ukrainian flag to Svyatoslav Vakarchuk during the song devoted to the Ukrainians and chanted “Glory to Ukraine”.

Okean Elzy plays concerts in Homel, Vitsebsk, Hrodna and Brest with the programme that was presented in Minsk on the band's 20th anniversary.
