300 thousand to lose jobs by the end of 2015

The situation in the labour market of Belarus can become a serious reason for social tension.

By the end of 2015 the number of those unable to find job may exceed 300 thousand. The government does not yet take adequate steps on prevention of such a scenario.

Experts from "Belarus in focus" predict that the situation in the labour market may become a serious reason for social tension, Zautra Tvaie Krainy writes.

Job demand in Belarus already significantly exceeds the number of vacancies.

The sharpest vacancy recession and the most active growth of CVs are observed among workers, car business, transport, logistics, production, construction, and immovable property. But decrease of demand for labour force is observed almost in all spheres.

The vast majority of vacancies are low-paid jobs for unskilled workers.

"A situation with official unemployment will only aggravate", experts predict.

According to the employment support programme 2015 the number of unemployed may increase up to 180 thousand. Government expert say 280 thousand people (6% of able-bodied population) will seek for jobs by the end of 2015.

"However, of March 1 216 thousand of those officially employed had a vacation/an idle time or worked a part-time week", the review of Belarus in focus notes.

Predictions are as follows: tension in the labour market will increase because of labour migration flows: return of Belarusian workers from Russia due to slowdown in Russian economy and influx of Ukrainian workers because of economic downturn and a military conflict in Ukraine.

Surveys show that the Belarusians adequately evaluate such negative perspectives, placing the unemployment in the top three list (along with the decline in output and the population impoverishment) of the challenges the country faces.

According to independent experts, the government does not take adequate steps on prevention of increasing social tension. To ease the situation officials put the blame for numerous cuts on employers.

"But the government does not have any instruments to involve employers into it, and no money to stimulate them to reeducate dismissed employees. The government can only restrain dismissal rates in the public sector before the elections, not so effectively", experts conclude.
