Inmates earn $60 a month in correctional facilities

The average wage of prisoners in correctional facilities is 800,000 Belarusian rubles (about $60).

The statement was made by Yury Haroshka, the head of the department on supervision over legality of criminal sanctions at the Prosecutor General's Office, at a briefing at the BelTA press centre.

The official said the average wage in April 2015 in open-type correctional facilities was 3.8 million Belarusian rubles. People who serve a term of detention cannot be employed except for those who must reimburse child maintenance expenses.

“We try to give jobs with higher wages to those who must reimburse expenses for child maintenance,” the representative of the Prosecutor General's Office said.

“All inmates of working age who want to work are employed,” added colonel of internal service Zhanna Baturytskaya, the head of the enforcement office at the Corrections Department of the Belarusian Interior Ministry.
