Director of company involved in construction of Vostochny cosmodrome detained in Minsk

Officers of the main criminal investigation department of the Belarusian Interior Ministry detained a native of Georgia, 45, who has been on the international wanted list for a few months.

Russia accuses the man of committing a serious economic crime, charter97.org learnt from the press service of the Interior Ministry.

The man is the director of a construction company involved in the construction of Vostochny cosmodrome in the Amur Region. Investigators suspect the company of receiving about 4 million Russian rubles as an advance payment and spending the money on economic activities not related to the construction.

A criminal case under part 4 of article 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (misappropriation or embezzlement, that is, the stealing of other people's property entrusted to the convicted person on a large scale) was opened against the director.

The man escaped. The main criminal investigation department of the Belarusian Interior Ministry learnt in the last days of May that the suspect might be in Minsk. It took a week to figure out the whereabouts of the man. He was detained in Minsk in his friend's car registered in Russia's Krasnodar Krai. Officers of the special task unit 3214 of the internal troops of the interior Ministry were engaged in the operation.

The man is held in custody. His extradition is being discussed.
