Parliament member: Unemployment growth is good

The increase in unemployment and stricter laws, in particular the ordinance on social parasites, have a positive effect on discipline.

As a result, it positively affects labour productivity. The statement was made by Larysa Bahdanovich, a deputy head of the standing commission of the “house of representatives” on labour and social issues, during a round-table discussion “Belarusian labour market: Does it help or impede modernisation?”, Minsk-Novosti reports.

Uladzimir Karahin, the chairman of the presidium of the Republican Business Confederation and head of the Minsk Union of Businessmen and Employers, reminded participants of the discussion about the catastrophic lack of human resources in Belarus in 2012-2013. He thinks the current situation is more favourable for businessmen, and it is a good time for business development.

He thinks workers received wages they didn't deserve due to low workforce productivity, which led to expectations of unreasonably high wages especially among young workers and the deformation of the labour market.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Belarus, the number of registered unemployed persons was 43,400 at the end of April 2015, which is 1.9-fold more than at the end of April 2014 and by 11.2% more than at the end of March 2015. The registered unemployment rate at the end of April 2015 was 1% of the country's economically active population.
