EU extends sanctions against Russia for a year

The European Union has extended for a year sanctions against Russia which were imposed over Crimea.

According to UNIAN's correspondent, the decision was taken without discussion at a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council in Brussels on Friday.

Details are expected to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union on June 20.

According to previous reports, permanent representatives of the EU member states agreed to prolong economic sanctions against Russia until January 31 next year. They also agreed to extend a ban on investments in occupied Crimea for a year.

Russia annexed Ukrainian Crimea in March 2014 and began to destabilise the situation in the Donbas region. The so called Donetsk and Luhansk “people's republics” were proclaimed with the direct involvement of Russian secret services and support of the Russian army. Russia supplies weapons and sends mercenaries and regular troops to Donbas.

The US, the EU, Canada, Japan, Australia and other countries imposed sanctions against Russia.
