Minister of labour and social protection of Belarus Maryana Shchotkina declined to comment on her remark that Belarusians should have two jobs.

“Two jobs? I didn't say so. Please read carefully what I really said, not what biased journalists wrote,” she said in the “house of representatives” on June 30, BelaPAN reports.

Asked if she saw the reaction of Belarusians to her remark, Shchotkina said: “So what? I said what I said. It was interpreted in a biased way, but this is an approach of journalists.”

According to BelTA state-owned news agency, Maryana Shchotkina said during a visit to Nyoman footwear factory in Hrodna on June 18: “The existing circumstances are predisposing a family to giving birth to more children, if it had been planned certainly. It is certainly unacceptable to deliver children just for the sake of a maternity grant or receiving a flat. But in case people decide to have two or three children, or more, they also understand that they should “be busy as a bee”, so to say. There is every possibility to earn more money today. We have noticed that almost 93% Belarusians have only one place of employment, including men. But in case a mother is a stay-at-home parent, a father should be more active at work. Moreover, appropriate amendments have been made to the labour law: an article about work from home, an opportunity to work at another enterprise the full day when one works part of the day at one enterprise. Now Belarusians should be active, humming, to promote their welfare.”

Journalists asked Shchotkina how many jobs her husband had, but the minister of labour and social protection didn't answer.
