The campaign “Human rights defenders for free elections” begins to monitor presidential “elections”in Belarus.

The statement was made at a press conference in Minsk with the participation of human rights defenders Aleh Hulak and Valiantsin Stefanovich, Euroradio reports.

They said a long-term observation campaign was planned. It will involve 50 people across Belarus, who will observe the registration of initiative groups and the formation of election commissions. Human Rights Defenders for Free Elections plans to observe the elections at 200 polling stations on the voting day.

Hulak stressed that the observation carried out by the campaign was “independent and non-political”. The campaign is going to record violations committed by both the opposition and the authorities. Stefanovich noted that human rights defenders could already notice the “unfavourable background for holding elections”. No positive changes have taken place in Belarus since the previous elections.

On June 30, the “house of representatives” set the date of the presidential “elections” for October 11, 2015. The Central Election Commission begins to register initiative groups of candidates today.
