80% of Belarusians fear new devaluation

72% of Belarusians think that the Belarusian economy is in a crisis.

It is shown by the results of the national survey held in June by the Independent Institute of Socio-Economic and Political Studies (IISEPS, Lithuania). As it is informed by the Institute, they had 1,513 respondents, and the non-sampling error was less than 3%, BelaPAN informs.

About 17% of respondents didn’t agree with the opinion of the majority (in March the correlation was 67.5% to 20%). Thus, sociologists note, “the anxiety over the future has not passed.” While in June 2014 25.6% of respondents expected improvement of the social and economic situation in the country, and the same quantity expected deterioration, at present the number of optimists has decreased to 21.7%, and pessimists – has raised to 36.5%.

“For example, despite assurances of the authorities, more than 80% of Belarusians still fear a new devaluation of the Belarusian ruble in the coming months (in September 2013 there were 72% of such people), 34.1% believe it is a real threat, and 46.5% think it is possible,” the IISEPS notes. According to 34.6% of respondents, “the state of affairs in the country in general is developing in the right direction,” while 49.4% say, in the wrong direction (36.9% to 45.8% in March).

“The priorities if economic fears are changing: though price rise stays in the first place – 76.9%, citizens are more and more concerned about unemployment – 55.8%, decline in production – 55.8%, and impoverishment – 49.3% (in March the figures were 84.1; 47.2; 50.3 and 46.8% respectively,” the report reads.

“In general, the economic well-being of Belarusians stays instable, though certain stabilization is observed. Thus, the number of those whose financial situation had worsened, decreased from 46.3% in March to 37.2% in June, and the number of those whose financial standing had improved, is at the same level, about 9% (“stays the same” – 44% before, 51.3% now). The average level of benefits (including salaries, pensions, allowances and other) per one member of a family last month has increased from 211$ in March to 240$ in June, though it has not reached the level of December 285$, yet,” sociologists note.
