Market trader from Vitsebsk: Government can also impose tax on air

The Belarusian authorities are again trying to slip their hands into people's pocket, and they are doing it unprofessionally.

Iryna Yaskevich, the leader of the small business movement and a market trader from Vitsebsk, said it to charter97.org.

– Chairman of the “council of the republic” Mikhail Miasnikovich proposed to charge VAT on parcels from abroad and to struggle against underdeclaration of a parcel's value. What can you say about a new “initiative” of the authorities?

– It's hard to assess Mikhail Miasnikovich for many reasons. Perhaps he counted the number of parcels. Perhaps he decided they contain brilliants and gold. I think VAT can be imposed if people are going to sell goods, if there are a seller and a buyer. What if I have friends, the husband, a son-in-law abroad? None of the countries in the world have such absurd measures. I'd recommend Miasnikovich to look who breathe deeply and impose a tax on them. The government is again trying to slip its hands into people’s pockets, and it is doing it for no reasons. Okay, we had 6 million parcels last year. How do they evaluate the parcels? Is the weight or the content important? How will it be checked? Well, they can open any parcel and see that it has “a watch, underwear” and other things. But do they have criteria to evaluate parcels? It seems to be a peculiarity of a country with martial law. When the government draws the iron curtain, we will be isolated and think that we live better than others.
