Lithuanian Ambassador to Belarus about political prisoners: A hope that the issue to be resolved in the near future exists

Evaldas Ignatavičius does not link the issue of political prisoners release with the "elections".

The head of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission said in the interview with Belsat TV channel.

Evaldas Ignatavičius detailed the visa negotiations, expectations from the upcoming elections, the situation with political prisoners, as well as the reduction of trade turnover between two countries. In particular, Mr Ignatavičius stressed that the issue of political prisoners was constantly discussed with the Belarusian government.

"A hope that the issue will be resolved in the near future exists. But I would not link it to such events as elections. We and representatives of the European Commission would like the issue to be resolved as soon as possible. However, the time for decision making is still unknown", he said.

According to the Ambassador, the further the EU-Belarus relations depend on the way of presidential "elections".

"The comments show that we have gained understanding. The OSCE representatives wish there are observers' questions, staff of electoral commissions, access of candidates to media. Lithuania will perform within this context, send its observers if conditions are created and the decision is made. We as the neighbouring state are interested in democratic and free elections for the situation does not occur when relations with international organizations are put aside to make a step up", Evaldas Ignatavičius said.
