Vice-President of the European Parliament: SWIFT cutout needed in Russia

In this case the aggressor will lose 5% of GDP in a year.

In case of further situation escalation in the Donbass, the European Parliament allows the international banking system SWIFT cutout in the Russian Federation. Ryszard Czarnecki, Vice-President of the European Parliament, stated that in the interview with Poland Radio.

"Both reasons for sanctions on Russia and Russian aggression in Ukraine still exist. Crimea is still occupied, as well as eastern part of Ukraine. There are no reasons, I emphasize, to lift sanctions. Russian lobby, certainly, is strong enough in the West. Many representatives of business and finances speak in Russian voice, they want to continue making money. I think the European Parliament should take into account possible deterioration of the situation, and work on further plan in case of conflict escalation", he stated.

He, on elaborative question about possible new sanctions on Russia, answered as follows: "It is SWIFT cutout in Russia. Due to it Russia would lose 5% of GDP in a year".

"I'd like to mention that within first two quarters Russia has lost 4.6% of its GDP. According to the results, the public treasury would lose 10%. It would be a disaster. I believe the European Union can halt the military aggression due to such sanctions. Putin is fond of military games. So, this toy must be taken away", the Vice-President of the European Parliament stated.

Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, Czarnecki stressed that the Ukrainian authorities should have truly implemented economic and judiciary reforms.

"Without it Putin's Russia is armed. All the time Russian propaganda reports in the West that the authorities in Kyiv do nothing. Modern Russia is an aggressor. Politicians must call a spade a spade", he pointed out.

Answering the question whether successful reforms could change the Kremlin's policy, the Vice-President stated that "only Putin is important for Putin".

"Sorry, but it will sound undiplomatic now: in any case Putin saves his butt. He wants to hide the fact that Russia has lost Ukraine from the political perspective. He attempts to pass it off with burning of food or with attack of the neighboring country. He does everything to preserve the support of KGB's elite. It is what made him the Prime Minister and the President two times", Czarnecki stated.
