EU to pass decision on “Belarusian” sanctions before end of October

Assessing the sanctions against Belarus the European Union is going to take into account the recent release of the six political prisoners and other factors.

BelaPAN was told about that by Maja Kociancic, spokesperson for EU foreign policy.

She stressed that in the joint statement of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn on August 22, the release of the political prisoners is called a long-awaited-for step forwards. “This move is an important progress of efforts for improving the relations between Belarus and the EU,” Kociancic noted. “When evaluating the restrictive measures, this positive event is to be taken into account, as well as other factors, which had become the reason for imposing the restrictive measures.” However she didn’t specify which factors she meant.

Answering the question whether the question of sanctions against Belarus would be discussed at the informal meeting of foreign ministers of the EU on September 4-5, Kociancic noted: “Ministers are to discuss the situation in the Eastern Partnership and in Russia in general. Gymnich Meetings are informal, where the main objective is exchange of opinions on a wide range of issues, while decisions are made during formal sessions.”

To the question whether freezing or lifting of sanctions against Belarus are possible before the presidential elections, Kociancic gave no answer, stressing that the decision on sanctions “should be passed before the end of October at the latest.”
