Belarusians are against Russia’s imperial symbols

A movement of solidarity Razam launches a campaign against Russian imperial symbols in Belarus.

Among other things, “St. George’s ribbons” are meant as well.

Ales Makaeu in his comments to Radio Racyja noted that imposing to Belarusians such signs as symbols of the victory over Nazism is inappropriate, as the same St. George’s ribbons were used by Russian punitive expeditioners, who had been fighting on the side of the German Nazi in the Second World War:

“A vivid example of that was a tragedy near the village of Ikonki, Vitsebsk region, when a brigade of Gil (a nom-de-guerre – “Rodionov”) rounded up 2,000 Belarusians. They naturally didn’t know Russian then. Gil offered those peasants to be pardoned for contacts with partisans to speak Russian. Unfortunately, no one was able to do that, and all of them were tortured to death. It was the First Russian National SS Brigade “Druzhina”, and a St. George’s ribbon was their symbol.”

It is noted in the address of Razam movement, that St. George’s ribbons were symbols of terrorists in Donbas. That is why the organisation urges to fight against the symbols of the empire.
