Head of US delegation at OSCE conference met with Belarusian opposition

The situation in Belarus is actively discussed at the OSCE’s Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM) that is held in Warsaw at these days.

Today the head of the US delegation to the OSCE meeting David J. Kramer, Senior Director for Human Rights and Democracy at the McCain Institute for International Leadership, has met with the leader of European Belarus civil campaign Andrei Sannikov, the editor-in-chief of the charter97.org website Natallia Radzina and the co-director of the Belarusian house Uladzimir Kobets.

The uppermost subject of the conversation was the situation in Belarus in the run-up to the so-called presidential elections.

“We have explained that the elections in Belarus are held just for selling Lukashenka’s regime to the West. It is obvious that there is going to be no turnout at the “elections” – people do not believe that this show is to result in any improvements, and expect nothing but deterioration of the situation. Lukashenka’s model of government is bankrupt for a long time, the dictator can rule only with the use of violence and administrative leverage.

Today the entire opposition is supporting boycott of the electoral farce, and it should be an acid test for the West, primarily Europe, to evaluate the “elections”.

The number of people who want changes in the country is growing. Another chance for changing the situation in Belarus should not be missed,” Andrei Sannikov said to charter97.org website after the meeting.
