Blogger Eduard Palchys’ Trial Starts Today

Eduard Palchys has been recognized as a political prisoner by the Belarusian human rights activists.

Today, on October 14, the trial of blogger Eduard Palchys, the founder and creator of the 1863x.com site, starts at the Minsk City Court at 10.00 a.m. The hearing will be held in closed session.

Palchys, known on the Internet under the name Jonh Silver, posted on his website materials with critical assessment of Russian policy towards Belarus and Ukraine. Early in the year, he was detained in Russia and turned over to Belarus.

The blogger is accused of inciting racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic or other social hatred (Article 130, Part 1 of the Criminal Code) and of the dissemination of pornographic materials (Article 343 of the Criminal Code). According to the first article, he faces up to 5 years of restriction of freedom, according to the second one – up to four years in prison.
