Regardless of this, the authorities will have to reckon with the mass support that the citizens of Belarus give to Eduard Palchys.

“Belarusian human rights defenders recognize Eduard Palchys a political prisoner, – President of the human rights center ‘Viasna’ Ales Bialiatski summarizes in an interview to Radio Liberty. – In fact, starting with the very first days of his arrest, we have closely monitored this case and it was obvious it had a political bias, although the Belarusian authorities would never confess of that. However, I think that the public opinion of Belarusians remains categorical and the authorities will have to reckon with it.”

Ales Bialiatski considers that the reason for Eduard Palchys’ arrest was his position regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which caused discontent of the Russian secret services:

“This appears a continuation of the trends we have been observing for the recent years. Persecution of Eduard Palchys is strongly connected with the actions committed by the secret services after the war between Russia and Ukraine started. I think that the connections between the secret services of Russia and Belarus played a significant part in initiating a criminal harassment of Eduard Palchys. We know how free democratic bloggers are persecuted in Russia; dozens of people are criminally harassed for their statements, for their critical assessments of Russia’s role in the war in Donbass. It seems obvious that this very connection is present here – he is harassed for the same things,” – the HR defender thinks

We remind, the trial against the founder of the website 1863x.com Eduard Palchys, whom the Belarusian human rights defenders recognize as political prisoner, has started today in the Minsk city court.

Eduard Palchys is charged under the criminal articles “incitement to racial, national or religious enmity or antagonism” and “distribution of pornographic materials”.
