Józef Piłsudski Announced Belarusian 25 Years Ago

The sensational statement was based on records of interrogation of 19-year-old revolutionary Józef Piłsudski performed by Russian gendarmes.

25 years ago it was announced that the famous political and military leader of Poland, the head of the Polish state Józef Piłsudski (1867 - 1935) was a Belarusian.

BELTA pronounced it in October 1991 and it was borrowed by other Belarusian media, euroradio.fm informs.

It was noted that the Main Archive of the Republic of Belarus "found a document refuting the existing idea that a well-known politician of Poland in 20 - 30s Józef Piłsudski was a Polish". The record of interrogation of March 10, 1887 notes that he said: he was a man of Belarusian persuasion.

Later Professor Aliaksandr Hatckevich in his article "Józef Piłsudski. a Belarusian or a Pole?" quoted the document: "My name is Osip Osipovich Piłsudski; I am 19-years old; I am a nobleman and Belarusian... ". A historian made it possible that Pilsudski had ancestors of "the Belarusian Catholic branch." Józef himself, born on the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, spoke Belarusian.

At the same time Hatckevich noted that "it is impossible to idealize the protocol response of Piłsudski while the interrogation, because "false answers of those arrested revolutionaries for political reasons were used to confuse the police,".
