A new minimum subsistence wage of 174,52 Belarusian rubles will be implemented in Belarus from November 1.

This amount is 98 kopeks less than the subsistence wage implemented today, BelTA reports referring to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

Last time the minimum subsistence wage decreased a year ago. The Ministry of Labor explained last year's drop in subsistence wage by “the September drop in prices for fruit and vegetables as compared to June.” The current decrease in subsistence wage is also associated with the seasonal cheapening of vegetables in Belarus.

The size of the minimum subsistence wage also affects the size of some allowances given to families raising children – these are, for example, a lump sum benefit granted at birth of a child or a benefit given for a disabled child. However, if the minimum subsistence wage decreases, the benefits are not recalculated and are paid in the previous amount.
