“Officials Have Huge Wages, But Can’t Get Enough”

The corruption in the country grew to an unprecedented extent during Lukashenka’s reign.

Lukashenka has been “struggling” with corruption for 22 years, but these are just empty words. However, in practice, he encourages it every possible way. The corruption in the country grew to an unprecedented extent during his reign. It has practically paralyzed the country – everyone takes bribes, but not everyone stands trial for that.

Even if they do, the officials who made a slip usually get released early and get very plum jobs afterwards.

For example, in Homel region, 383 corruption-related crimes were committed by 63 people in 10 months. The material damage caused to the budget was established to be over Bn 310 K.

Thievish people most often commit embezzlements by abuse of official duties, take bribes, misuse power. The state administration, trade, industry, health care and agriculture year after year become the most “popular” spheres where corruption is revealed.

Homelskaya Pravda has asked the residents of Homel how, in their opinion, the corruption crimes should be punished.

Valer Karlashou, builder:

— The punishment must be very brutal. Like in China – to shoot them dead. Some occupy top positions and think they can do anything. They receive huge wages, judging from the point of view of ordinary people, but they can’t get enough. So, when an official takes a high-ranked position, they must know about the high level of responsibility as well.

Albina Belashytskaya, a resident of Homel:

— Sadly, nothing’s gonna help if the people have no conscience. Honesty should be taught since early childhood. The main role here should be played by parents - not education, but upbringing in the family. It’s the parents who should explain their children at a very early age that it is bad to take somebody else’s belongings. Today, corruption cannot be defeated by any threats of fines. Many people just have no conscience!

Ihar Likharadau, an employee of the BMZ:

— To cut down the temptation of stealing something from the treasury, it should be the property of not only the officials themselves but their close relatives as well to get under confiscation. It often happens that the officials title expensive cars and houses in the name of their grandnephews, grandmothers and aunts. This moment should be monitored. They need to be reminded what they can lose more often.

Mikhail Chaikou, a pensioner:

— To prevent corruption, there should be no access to money. If a person slips anyway, they should be removed from the position. However, they should not be ousted in nowhere, but forcibly employed to the lowest-paid position at the same company. Let them build their careers from the start. For instance – a person was a director and became a worker.
