The European Parliament Adopts Resolution on Belarus

EU institutions should cooperate with the civil society in Belarus.

Progress in promotion of democratic values in Belarus is insufficient, the European Parliament's resolution on Belarus adopted on November 24 says.

According to BelaPAN, the document notes that Belarus still has political prisoners, persecution of the opposition and the death penalty is practiced. According to MEPs, Belarus is not able to resolve doubts about the safety of construction site of the nuclear power plant in Astravets.

The resolution stresses that since 1994 the country has failed to have fair and free elections, any attempts to achieve it in 2015 and 2016 failed.

Key sectors of the Belarusian economy are under state control, no political party has been established since 2000 year, authorities have invented new ways of persecution and even imprisonment of opposition representatives, MEPs say.

They urge the Belarusian authorities to terminate such practice, they also confirm readiness to provide assistance to pro-democratic intentions of the Belarusian people.

Deputies also call on the European External Action Service and the European Commission to prolong and augment support of the Belarusian civil society organizations both in Belarus and abroad.

The resolution urges Belarus to join the moratorium on the death penalty as the first step towards its complete abolition.

Besides, MEPs expressed their concern about safety regulation at the construction site at the Belarusian NPP located 50 km away from the capital of Lithuania. They call for international monitoring of the construction site to ensure compliance with all standards of nuclear safety and protection of environment.

468 deputies voted for, against - 21, 93 deputies abstained from voting.
