Belarusian Amerikanka of Andrei Sannikov Released in Moscow

Belarusian Amerikanka of Andrei Sannikov Released in Moscow

"Belarusian Amerikanka, or Elections under Dictatorship" is published with the participation of Novaya Gazeta.

Novaya Gazeta published an article by Yury Safonov devoted to the publication of Andrei Sannikov's book:

- The book of Andrei Sannikov - presidential candidate and former political prisoner and friend of Novaya Gazeta - is released in the Russian market. Friendship happened when troubles occurred: Andrei Sannikov and his wife Iryna Khalip (our staff reporter) were captured in Minsk and put behind bars.

The reason - they were not satisfied with election frauds and took a peaceful action. Iryna was imprisoned during six months, Sannikov - 16 months.

It would have last even more - Lukashenka's court slapped him 5 years - but under pressure of European sanctions the dictator stepped back.

Those 16 months were the hard time: tortures, threats, the unknown... 4 prisons (three of them were "visited" 2 times) three colonies, eight transportations under guard.

Almost all of that time Sannikov had no idea what was going on with his wife and Khalip could only guess about the fate of Sannikov. At the same time humane Belarusian policemen securing false confessions threatened them with "confiscation" of their son, 3 year-old Daniel.

Tough and dynamic, sad and bright Sannikov's book tells about the family drama, lawlessness, and the political struggle, which ends for opponents of the regime with prison outrage, family dramas, or death in modern Belarus.

The book is about love. To the family, companions, a land spot in the center of Minsk which turned to be the prison for him (the KGB's prison is a few steps away from his home) and to his homeland which "will be free". Candidate Sannikov knows the conditions.

The book tells about the political ground of the candidate and his writing talent.

That was the escape not only of Sannikov: fairy tales written in prison helped him to keep in touch with his son Daniel.

Writing haiku helped him when interrogations and interviews with KGB officers.

Sannikov's story itself cannot be a boring one.

"Fate does not like to be tempted. In the first interview after resigning as the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs I said: "I don't want this country to become the GULAG, Sannikov writes. - But not only Belarus, but also me turned to become the part of the system which is being reinforced."

You can find the book in shops - it is the exit from dark barracks.
