Ambassador of Poland Offers Making Brest Visa-Free for the Poles

On Wednesday Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Poland in Belarus Konrad Pawlik visited Brest.

His working visit coincided with the appointment of Pyetr Kazakevich as the Consul General of Poland in Brest. Ambassador and Consul General met with the Chairman of the Brest Regional Council Anatol Lis, Vechernij Brest writes.

The governor spoke about cooperation prospects in various fields. In his view, the potential for its development in trade, economic and socio-cultural spheres is far from being exhausted. "Belarus is on the boundary of the Eurasian Economic Community and the European Union, which creates favourable conditions for sales, capital and services promotion on both sides," the head of the Brest region stressed.

In turn, Konrad Pawlik noted increased activity of contacts between Belarus and Poland at the intergovernmental level, which, in his opinion, created a good motivation in interregional cooperation. Program "Poland-Belarus-Ukraine" up to 2020 has a great potential; it provides for tens of projects in different spheres - education, sports, tourism, ecology and assistance to infrastructure in regions, the ambassador stressed. He also expressed interest in granting border-straddling Brest the status of visa-free city for citizens of Poland and the EU, like it has been done to Hrodna.

In general, the governor supported the idea, but with a caveat: it goes beyond his competence and the issue should be resolved at the governmental level of both countries.

Then the talks continued behind closed doors. Topics were as follows: modernization of the waterway E40 (Dnieper - Bug - Vistula), popularization of the history of Polesie, joint reconstruction of the Rejtanov estate in Hrushauka (Lyakhavichy district), migration situation on the Belarusian-Polish border, as well as the joint organization of the forum of the regions of the two countries.
