Miklós Haraszti stated that death penalty indicates the outrageous inobservance of the right to life by the Belarusian authorities.

Last week, the European Union has confirmed the execution of three death sentences in Belarus – prisoners Hennadz Yakavitski, Ivan Kulesh and Siarhei Khmeleuski were executed in November. Earlier, in April 2016, Siarhei Ivanou was executed, Radio Svaboda reports.

On December 5, the UN Special Rapporteur Miklós Haraszti stated that death penalties indicate the outrageous inobservance of the right to life by the Belarusian authorities.

Belarus is the only European country where the death penalty is applied. According to human rights activists, more than 400 people have been executed in Belarus since the beginning of the 1990s. Only one of those sentenced to death has been pardoned by Lukashenka.
