"It's Enough of Lukashenka-Style Business"

Talks between individual entrepreneurs (IEs) and bureaucrats are useless.

Former political prisoner and leader of Solidarity movement Mikalai Autukhovich stated that in the interview to charter97.org when commenting on business forum held the other day in Minsk.

- Now any talks with bureaucrats are useless, they do not decide. The economy is in such a big gap that miserable concessions to entrepreneurs do not make any sense. And I doubt that the authorities will suddenly burst with intention to let entrepreneurs rescue the economy.

I don't know what the recent forum was about, but previous ones just lowered temperature. The decision making upon selective issues means to stall.

Belarusian IEs are the vanguard of the power, which can swing a lot of people, because our entrepreneurs are more independent, they do not need "forum-barriers" organized by authorities. Nothing will be decided there! These forums just beat the air. In result, entrepreneurs are left with nothing.

We also work in the regions and many entrepreneurs there say that they are ready to come to Minsk, but only when they are sure that the protest action will be the decisive and the final one. They are ready to fight till the end.

Our Solidarity movement has specific plans and goals we pursue. Now entrepreneurs have no right to be bent on a particular Lukashenka's decree and ignore common problems of Belarusians.

Changes are based not decision of the authorities' permissions. They may permit something, but how can it change anything? It's just a stay, the problem is about another thing. All Belarusians are not able to work in their own country. They leave for better life in other countries.

What should we talk about with the authorities? We decide upon Decree No. 222, but this is not a problem. Now people spend almost all their salaries for food and rent bills. And those who have lost their jobs are automatically turn into "spongers" and are subject to the tax on "parasitism". What are you talking about? This is extortion racket of the government. Where should jobless people take money from? To steal or to rob? What a stupid law? And pensioners across the country are trying to save money by any means.

- What should entrepreneurs do against the backdrop of such economic crisis?

- The people can make a difference. And entrepreneurs are the most unpredictable part of the society. IEs have no habit to take risks, this is what the authorities have learned them to do by constant tightening of screws, increasing taxes and toughing up laws for business activity. It's enough of Belarusian-style business! Entrepreneurs are independent people, they cannot be frightened, for example, with removal from a job, they can be an example. Many entrepreneurs we keep in touch with support the establishment of our organization. They know and understand that the situation should change.

We run our country and we should not just stand and look at lawlessness of bureaucrats. The people should decide. And people in power must make it clear that every their deed will be judged by the people's court.
