Katouka Square Defenders Demand To Punish City Crews

The residents of Minsk submitted a complaint against the utilities services workers to the police.

The defenders of Minsk square Katouka addressed to the police demanding to punish the workers of the utility providing services, the actions of whom caused damage to several people, the BelaPAN news agency writes.

According to Chairperson of the Green Network Association Chryscina Charniauskaya, about 10 people submitted complaints to the police.

“We are asking to identify the people who conducted illegal actions against us, ad to subject them to administrative responsibility,” — Ms. Charniauskaya said.

According to her, at least four people were sent to the forensic-medical examination.

“We will record the bruises. Then we will address to the trauma bay, as many of us probably have luxations – they twisted our arms,” — the Green Network Association’s Chairperson claimed.

In the daytime on December 7, during the works in the Katouka square, the city crews wearing the uniform of the enterprises “Zelenstroy” and “Remavtodor” dragged the square defenders away from the trees, pushed them and used foul language. The police did not interfere.

In the evening on December 7, at the meeting with the initiative group of the local inhabitants, head of the Minsk city executive committee Andrei Shorets promised to “take a time-out” in cutting down trees.

At present moment, they have cut down 8 out of 50 trees stated in their plan.

A Catholic Church is planned to be constructed in the Katouka square. Local residents and environmentalists remain convinced that construction of any building in the green zone violates the law.

In May, the works in the square were suspended under the pressure of the society. In October, the community “"The Roman Catholic parish of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and St. Eugene de Mazeno" was granted a new permit for carrying out the building and assembly jobs.

Since November 8 till December 2, the administration of the Savetski district of Minsk carried out public discussions of the correction of the detailed plan of the Agro-Settlement. The local inhabitants think the plan should be revised and the revised draft should be repeatedly presented at a public discussion. Over 1,5 thousand people signed the corresponding petition, also for the protection of the Katouka square.

Previously, local residents and environmentalists also appealed to the executive committee, to the Minsk City Executive Committee and directly to head of the Catholic Church Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz with a call to consider alternative sites for construction. However, in his response to the appeal Kondrusiewicz said that he found it inappropriate to consider any alternative sites for construction.
