Mass Children’s Poisoning Near Hrodna: Details

Medical practitioners and parents told about details of mass poisoning at Ratichy school near Hrodna.

Provisional diagnosis is intoxication with unknown substance. Four children are in intensive care.

News on Belarus 1TV channel informs. 35 children were taken to the Hrodna regional children’s hospital. Calls to hospital started round midday. Children complained of nausea, weakness and stomachache.

All children are taken to Hrodna regional children’s hospital. Teaching and learning activities are suspended.

“A classroom teacher made a call and informed about child’s weakness. An ambulance was the second to arrive. The child was lying on a blanket covered with jackets and was pale and shivered with fever. As soon as the ambulance arrived, they started to measure pressure and temperature. They gave an injection and delivered children to hospital. We took our child to the hospital on our own, other children were taken their by the ambulance,” mother of one of children told.

Head Physician of the regional children’s hospital Sergei Tarantsei said that children had had a short-term weakness and loss of consciousness.

"The diagnosis has not yet been delivered. Any toxicity is possible, "he said.

The Health Minister of Belarus Vasil Zharko took the situation with poisoning under personal control.

A group of medical practitioners with Deputy Minister Ihar Lasitski have left for Hrodna. If needed, Minsk specialists will assist their Hrodna colleague.

“Crime scene investigation team is taking actions. Investigators examine the scene of action, BelTA informs. More information will be provided on completion of legal proceedings,” Yulia Hancharova, representative of the Investigative Committee, said.
