Russian Scientist: Belarusian Authorities Could Try To Get Nuclear Weapons

The interest of the Belarusian government to create its own nuclear power plant might be connected with a desire to obtain nuclear weapons.

Such an opinion was expressed by famous Russian biologist, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Yablokov. He touched on this theme during the discussion at the international conference Chernobyl + 30, which was held in Minsk on April 24.

“If a country has access to peaceful nuclear technology, it has passed the half-way so as to have a nuclear weapon. A nuclear weapon is a weapon of state blackmail, as we now observe it in Russia”, – BelaPAN quotes Yablokov’s words. The Russian scientist said that there is a “powerful nuclear research center” (Joint Institute of Power and Nuclear Research “Sosny”) in Belarus, and, having their own plutonium, the production of an atomic bomb would not be a problem.
