Liabedzka To Council Of Europe: You Can’t Give Money To “Judicial Conveyor”
ANATOL LIABEDZKA

Investments in the judicial system, which does not exist is a bad practice.

On April 28, at the opening ceremony of the International conference “Professional Training of Judges and Prosecutors: the Council of Europe’s Approach” journalists reminded the representative of the Council of Europe, Philippe Boillat, about trials of opposition activists and asked, what the Council of Europe expects to teach Belarusian judges and prosecutors under these circumstances, Radio Svaboda reports.

“It is hard to say for me, as I do not know concrete facts, to which you are making reference to. What I can do in this situation is to attract attention to the standards of the Council of Europe in these issues,” – Philippe Boillat answered and explained that the aim of education is “to bring Belarus nearer to the legal standards of Europe.”

Over the last half a year the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabedzka has been fined huge sums for more than 5 times for participation in street protest rallies.

As said by Anatol Liabedzka, policemen, who gave evidence against him at court trials, were giving false evidence, but judges were not interested by that. Anatol Liabedzka believes that training of Belarusian judges and prosecutors at the conference held with participation of the Council of Europe, would not draw them nearer the standards of the European democracy.

“I believe that investments in what does not exist – is a bad practice. Grants cannot be spent on the judicial system, which does not exist or which amounts to a political repressive conveyor. When such events are held, two sides, or even three sides should be definitely present there. When you invite judges and prosecutors, invite their victims as well. Then it will be a discussion, a debate. It could be unpleasant, it could be fierce, but only in such a case it would be able to show the facts of life in Belarus. As when one listens to Sukala only, he would not ever mention degradation of the judicial system, but he is to say some standard words.

So it would be good for those who organise such conferences, in this case, the Council of Europe, to insist from the start that there would be a venue for discussion where different sides are to defend different point of views. It is not done by them. And the second thing, let Mr Boillat attend the trials when people stand trial just for the fact of being present at the Freedom Day rally, authorized by the authorities by the way. I am grateful to journalists, who ask these questions to him, and let them [judges] blush for this practice then. As it only brings us to a deadlock – the oppositional politician believes.
