The trust limit towards the current authorities has been practically exhausted.

The founding meeting of the Belarusian National Congress (BNC) took place on May 15 in Yanka Kupala Square in Minsk. According to the organizers, the congress will work as a constantly active union of the country’s democratic forces. The participants of the event approved the resolution “On Unity of Democratic Forces”. The BNC’s initiative has been supported by well-known opposition politicians Stanislau Shushkevich, Uladzimir Niakliaeu, Mikalai Statkevich, Viachaslau Siuchyk, as well as their allies and activists of Radio-Electronic Industry Trade Union headed by Chairman Henadz Fiadynich.

The trade union leader has commented upon the decision to join the BNC and shared the trade union’s plans for the activity in the framework of the new democratic forces structure, created on May 15, with praca-by.info

– A precise goal has been set in the trade union’s program for the next 5 years – to fight for democratization of the society by all possible means. We believe that in the conditions of today’s deep economic and political crisis all sane social forces must unite. This concerns not just parties, movements and trade unions. The goal of any opposition, not only the Belarusian one, is to unite all the people who care about what is happening in the country today. Then it will be possible to elaborate reasonable decisions which will be clear to the people. Of course, any reform puts extra burden on the people. However, if the people know what is worth suffering for some time, and that the situation will get better in some six months or a year, the people will give their support. The trust limit towards the current authorities has been practically exhausted. The wages went down, there is lack of jobs, the number of high paid employees considerably decreased, the youth leaves the country, the pension protection issue remains acute, the prices for communal services flew up and no one explained the reason for that or justified the exact figures. The authorities and the people exist separately. It shouldn’t be this way. If we want to live a happy and decent life in our country, we need to change the situation, the authorities should change, and the interests of working persons, of the citizens of Belarus should be made top priority. This is the approach we stand for, that is why we decided to participate in the Belarusian National Congress.

– What are the next steps to be taken by the trade union in the framework of the BNC?

– Working in the regions. Working with specialists, including the ones from the authorities, to elaborate the socio-economic and political program which would be understandable for simple people. Our activists are willing to disseminate the head-notes of this program among the people, the workers, and conduct enlightening work. The unprepared demonstration activity should give way to the systematic enlightening work with the population.

– Will the Congress manage to become a uniting platform for the democratic forces as a number of opposition parties have not supported the very idea of the BNC?

– True, some leaders of registered parties, movements and steering committees for creating parties preferred to stay aside. I believe it was a poorly thought decision. I would say: members of all opposition parties and movements put together make much less than the total number of the people who want changes. So, I see no problem or disruption here. The door for leaders of all parties and movements stays open. If you want to be useful for the society, then we need to be together!

However, nevertheless, we should focus on the people who want better lives for their children, for their country, and help them self-organize. It doesn’t matter whether they are in a party or not. When favourable conditions for registration and activity of parties are created, the people will decide whom they feel closer to, by themselves. Therefore, the Congress may become the moving force that will start the flywheel of progressive changes in our country.
