Homel Authorities Want to Hear Nothing of Drop of Wages

Trade Union activists would like to express a protest against reduction of wages and dismissal of employees.

Deputy Chairman of the Homel City Executive Committee Siarhei Andreeu refused the independent Trade Union of Workers of Radio and Electronic Industry (REP) in a protest against cuts in wages. The gorispolkom believes that the action with participation of 15 people needs an ambulance and a brigade of cleaners, HRC Viasna informs.

Head of the Homel representative office of the REP Viktar Kazlou reminds that recently a number of employees of different enterprises have presented against reduction of wages, significant change of working conditions related to the reduction of the work week.

"OAO Gomelkhlebprom has reduced a work day for major part of employees by three quarter - to 2 hours a day, the car crane operators are paid Br2 million a month in OAO Gomelpromstroi, OAO Seismotekhnik works one day a week (on Thursday) and those with expiring working agreements are not offered to extend them, more simply they get rid of workers without any explanation," the Belarusian Trade Union's leader says.

The legal inspector of the REP in the Homel region Leanid Sudalenka stresses the imposition of requirements to sign a paid contracts with medical practitioners and sanitary services is a gross violation of their rights to hold a peaceful assembly and, as a consequence, to express their opinion. In the lawyer's words, the trade union's activists are concerned about their way of thinking and intend to appeal against the prohibition.

"The prohibition to hold a picket runs counter both to the Constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Thus, we intend to appeal against the decision, and if necessary to address to the UN Human Rights Committee," the Trade Unions' lawyer said.
