Human rights activists urge the UN to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Belarus.

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) made a corresponding statement on May 26, BelaPAN writes.

“In spite of the minor measures taken, the nature of the regime, which has been ruling for almost 22 years already, hasn’t changed. Belarusian civil society is still under pressure. We are spied upon, the authorities organize provocations. UN Special Rapporteur is the only international mechanism of monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation in the country we have. His mandate should be renewed,” – the Human Rights Center Viasna quotes Ales Bialiatski, the Vice-President of the FIDH, the leader of the Human Rights Center Viasna, closed by the Belarusian authorities.

It is noted that the systematic nature of violations of human rights committed in Belarus today is confirmed by the evidence of well-known Belarusian human rights defenders: Alena Tankachova (Legal Transformation Centre (Lawtrend)), Andrei Bastunets (Belarusian Association of Journalists), Raisa Mikhailouskaya (Belarusian Documentation Center), Valiantsin Stefanovich (the Human Rights Center Viasna), Natallia Mankouskaya (Human Rights Center Identsichnasts).

Special Rapporteur on Belarus Miklós Haraszti will present a regular report on the situation in the country at the 32nd regular session of the Human Rights Council (31 June to 01 July 2016).

The covering letter prepared by the Council Secretariat, which was issued today, states:

“The findings show that, except for the recent release of political prisoners on the eve of the 2015 presidential election, no improvements have been introduced in the systemic, entrenched curtailment of basic human rights that triggered the establishment of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur in 2012.”

On June 30, member countries of the UN Human Rights Council will vote for or against the renewal of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Belarus.
