Activists of the United Civil Party are summoned to court for handing out printed materials near the entrance of the plant.

On May 6 the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabedzka, as well as activists of the organisation Volha Mayorava and Dzianis Krasachka are to stand trial at the court of Zavadski district of Minsk in an administrative case related to handing out informational materials near the entrance of Minsk Automobile plant on April 14.

“Almost every day trials are held over oppositional activists for participation in unsanctioned rallies. But on May 6 a precedent could be created: in fact, a ban is imposed on handing out informational materials,” – Liabedzka said on May 3 at a press-conference in Minsk, BelaPAN reports.

The politician noted that earlier there were no trials for handing out informational materials. “We simply kept the number of informational materials under 299 (printed materials with less than 300 copies do not need registration – charter97.org). It allowed to formally prevent violation of the law by us,” – he said.

Liabedzka noted that if on May 6 the UCP activists are to be subject to administrative responsibility, a precedent is to be created, and “courts are to fine for handing out informational materials which displease the government.” “It is a catastrophe for the UCP. We go to entrances of plants, to markets. The ban on handing out informational materials is to paralyze our activities,” – he stressed.

The politician said that the UCP is going “to address to the international community.” “We shall send letters to embassies with an invitation to come to the court and see what the liberalization in Belarusian style really means,” – he said.
